Mr. A.I.HASSAN                                                                   DURATION 1 HOUR

As a young girl in Morocco, Fatima dreamed of leaving home someday, going to university and getting a job, she didn’t see herself in the traditional role of a married Moroccan woman, dressed in the simple elegance of a Moroccan dress and staying home to manage a household.

Then, when she was 21, an arranged marriage steeped in Moroccan tradition ended up giving Fatima the untraditional Moroccan life she wanted – but in Madrid’s Northern suburbs. Fatima’s new life in Spain is a long way from the small Moroccan town called Boulmane where she grew up. She met her husband, Tawfik, through relatives when he decided to return to Morocco to find a wife in 2008.

Tawfik, 29, has lived in the Spain since he was 7 years old, when his father came to work here as a farm manager. The family has long been a part of the Moroccan community in Madrid, but Tawfik wanted a wife raised with traditional Moroccan values, including a willingness to live with his family.

Fatima had the option of denying Tawfik’s marriage request, but the couple met twice and liked each other. They shared many of the same values and decided to marry. "I thought I was going to say, ‘No’, but when I saw him, everything was different," Fatima said, laughing.   "He was very handsome, and I liked his family. For us Moroccans, the constant support and cooperation of family members is important." Fatima is very happy with her new life in Spain. She’s attending Madrid University and she hopes to graduate and make her childhood dreams come true.
